A Little Background

This story has a sad beginning. In 1999, my family came down to visit me in NC on my summer vacation, and since I had never been to the beach, we all decided to go. Well, there was an accident--my father got caught in a rip tide and though he lived for a week after, he never regained consciousness. I continued with school, but it proved very difficult and I was emotionally overwrought by the time I graduated. When I got a job at the Perry Library in Henderson, I was still quite overwrought and considering counseling.
It was at the first summer reading program that I met Sensei Steve Gupton. He offered me (as advertising) a free month of classes at his martial arts dojo, and I accepted (as a way to stay out of counseling, to which I have an aversion.) And lo and behold if the study of martial arts didn't help a great deal! I was able to find a useful (and non-harmful) outlet for my mixed emotions, and learn a very interesting and practical study at the same time.

Just a little more... The study at the dojo includes anything effective in self defense, for men, women, or children: small circle jujitsu, pressure point work, Gracie jujitsu (ground fighting), muay thai, arnis, and basic karate.
